Hey who said composting has to stink ? Actually if you follow a few simple guidelines your composter should have a nice earthy smell to it , if it starts to stink you just need to make some adjustments. One of the most common mistakes made by the newbie composter is just throwing all your salad scraps or grass clipping into your composter and nothing else. What happens is these scraps are very high in Nitrogen and very wet so they tend lean more toward, what one would call rotting more than composting. You have to remember to try and balance your composter with both Nitrogen and carbon, so along with your salad and veggie scraps , you want to throw in those leaves and other brown dry material that has lots of carbon. This will give you a nice healthy mixture and keep the smell down and provide you with plenty of nutrient rich mulch for all your gardening needs.

So lets get serious about composting , 2 composters are better than 1 if you have the room. While you are filling one composter the other one can be busy soaking up heat from the sun and breaking down the scraps. By the time your composter in the sun is done , it can emptied of its rich compost and will ready to switch place with the now full composter and off you go , full tilt composting. It doesnt matter whether its a drum type composter a more simple design , what ever your budget can afford , try to have 2 on hand to keep your compost flowing !

Learning how to compost your household wastes is a great way to help the environment as it cuts down on the amount of garbage that ends up in our landfills. Compost makes an excellent soil amendment and can be used instead of commercial fertilizers, which saves you money and is all natural! Compost will help to improve the quality of your soil structure, by increasing aeration and your soils water holding capacity as well as providing the necessary nutrients for your garden flowers and vegetables. All of which stimulates healthy root development in your plants and creates a balanced environment that produces Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus all of which aids in growing healthy fruits and vegetables.

The process of composting requires a balance of both Carbon and Nitrogen to maintain a healthy population of microbes that are essential in the Garden Composting Process. The bulk of your nitrogen can come from grass clippings, vegetable scraps and other green materials. Carbon can be found in dead leaves, wood chips, hay and other dead plant materials. Again composting in a Quadel Composter will aide in retaining heat for composting all year long and keep pests away and keep your backyard looking neat and clean.

One of the advantages of using a Quadel Composter is being able to keep big animals out while letting the little ones in. The big animals of course will be mice and rats, raccoons ,squirrels and other critters that may want to forage through your scraps , these are not animals you want to have access to your compost pile. On the other hand with out the little animals like , worms and insects and bacteria you would not have any composting at all so you do want these animals to interact with your scraps, hence the advantage of using a Quadel Composting device. with a composter you can keep out the unwanted pests, while allowing the beneficial life forms to do the job mother nature intended !

Moisture and Temperature levels are key to getting optimum composting conditions in your composter. If you don’t have enough moisture and too low of temperatures you are not going to get the results you want . So there are some things you can do to help in there areas. One thing is to find a composter that is of dark color to help absorb heat , especially in cooler climates. Also watch your moisture content , you want at least a 50% humidity level inside your composting device , in drier climates that may mean you need to actually add water on occasion, make sure to use rain water if you can , as chemicals found in tap water will tend to slow down the natural process . It wetter climates make sure to monitor what amount of rainfall is allowed into your composter , you don’t want to over do it either when it comes to moisture, as with most things in nature , moderation is the key both moisture and temperature.

When deciding what to put in into your composter , one thing to keep in mind is with the exception of eggshells, all you want to be putting into your composter is organic plant , vegetable , fruit materials. Never use animal waste or meat or poultry scraps of any kind and that includes dairy products as well like cheese. Another common household waste is citrus peels from oranges , limes and other citrus fruits, while they will add to the over all nutrients eventually , they do have a tendency to slow down the natural process because of the natural acidic chemicals in them. But the basic rule of thumb is to keep it strictly plant matter and of course no poisons plants like oleander , or even waste like pine needles make very poor compost material. Generally speaking if your composting for the purpose saving it for gardening , stick with grass, leaves and household fruit and vegetable waste and you will be good to go.
